- ║ THE 12 FUNCTION KEYS ║
- ╚══════════════════════╝
- There are 12 usable Function Keys labeled
- from F1 to F12. These special keys on the top row
- of the keyboard are programmed to carry out
- certain functions; for example,
-
- √√√ F3.. The HELP key.
- It's not necessary to memorize a lot of commands
- in WordPerfect. The HELP key can do all this for you.
- WordPerfect can be your friend when you need HELP.
- Just press F3, then the FIRST letter of the function
- you need. For example, if you want to know the command
- for printing, press P. Then find the word print and the
- command <Shift F7>.
-
- If the F5 key is struck it will list the directory
- of the disk drive ( A, B, or C) that you are using.
-
- The F7 Key, called the exit key carries out functions
- that clear the screen. All Function Keys are used
- with other keys making possible hundreds of combinations.
-
- √√√ FOR THIS SPEED COURSE ONLY:
- Three F Function Keys (F5, F7, and F10) are used.
- The fourth key is the Control (Ctrl) key used in
- combination with the F2 key. The total number of
- keys and combinations of keys total eleven.
-
- The F7 and F10 keys are sometimes used to
- answer questions from the Program. If an answer
- is Yes a Y appears next to the F7 or F10. If the
- answer is No an N appears next to the F7 or the F10 Key.
- In some cases both N and Y are used.
-
- This is a list of the keys used in the Speed Course.
-
- F5 List directory
- F7 Exit key
- F7 N Y Exit from WordPerfect
- F7 N N Clear screen for writing a new document
- F10 Enter Save document or replace document
- F10 Enter Y Save corrected document
- Ctrl + F2 Spell Check

- √√√ THE CURSOR AND WRAP AROUND
- When you reach the end of a line with a typewriter you
- must use the carriage return to send the carriage
- back to the left and shift down one line. The computer
- is much more advanced.
-
- With a computer when you reach the end of a line, the
- cursor "automatically returns to the next line.
- This is called "Word Wrap." It means you can type as
- many lines as you like without having to hit the
- Enter key. These returns are called Soft returns.
-
-

-
-
-
-
- When you are at the end of a paragraph you use the
- Enter key to return the cursor to the next line.
- This is referred to as a Hard return. These returns
- are important when working with Blocks, such as
- a paragraph for deleting and other uses discussed later.
-
- √√√ THE BACKSPACE KEY
- The backspace key is located on the top row of the keyboard.
- It is the last key to the right; is usually gray in
- color and has a left arrow (an arrow pointing left).
-
- The backspace key is used to erase characters from
- the screen. To erase a letter or word place the cursor
- to the right (behind) the word or letter you wish
- to delete. Then press the backspace key as often
- as needed to erase the letter or word. As the name
- implies the backspace key only erases to the left.
- (Going back towards the first space).
-
-
- √√√ ENTER KEY
- The Enter key is the large key on the right side of the
- keyboard. It has a bent arrow facing left. When this key
- is depressed it moves down one line and returns to
- the left margin. When you type a command on the keyboard
- most times you must press the Enter key to tell the
- computer to carry out the command.
-
- √√√ ARROW KEYS
- There are four Arrow keys. These keys are usually kept
- close together. Each key has an arrow showing which direction
- it will move the flashing Cursor. If you need to delete an
- error move the cursor to that position then use the Del key.
-
- √√√ DELETE (DEL) KEY (Does not move Cursor; Cursor remains
- in one position)
- By depressing this key it will erase any text that is to the
- right of the Cursor. The Cursor remains stationary.
- The text moves left to the Del key and is deleted.
-
- Remember, the Backspace key will erase text that is to the
- left of the Cursor.
- The Del key will erase text that is to the right of the Cursor.
-
-
- √√√ THE F1 RESTORE KEY
- If you delete a word or sentence you can recover what was
- erase by using the F1 Function key.
- To restore:
- Place cursor at the location you want the deleted
- material, and press the F1 key.
-
- √√√ PAUSE KEY
- This key is used to stop a program to give you information
- or ask a question. It is also used to control large
- directories from rolling off the screen before they
- can be read.

- √√√ SPACE BAR, BLINKING CURSOR, AND THE FOUR ARROW KEYS
- A clean WordPerfect screen is like an uncharted forest.
- The only way you can enter this area is with your
- Space Bar (the long bar at the bottom of the keyboard)
- or by typing something on the screen.
- Both of these methods as they advance across the page
- of the screen create new paths or spaces.
- These spaces can now be used by the four arrows.
- The arrows can move to any position that has been
- occupied by the spacebar or any text.
-
- If you move the spacebar 20 columns, then the cursor can
- only move up to that 20th space and stop or drop down to
- the next line at column 1.
-
- If you press the Enter key and return the cursor
- to the left margin you will find that the cursor can't
- be moved forward or down where the Space Bar has not been.
-
- Before the cursor can move about the screen the spaces must
- be created either by the Space Bar or by typing in some text.
-
- DON'T HOLD "Dooooooooooown" (DOWN) THAT KEY!!
- Keys on a computer are different than a typewriter. With a
- typewriter if you hold down a key nothing happens.
- Don't do that with the computer keys or you will have
- a long string of the same letter. Computer keys must
- be struck lightly and the key released.
- This way you will get a single letter and not 10 or 20
- of the same letter.
-
- √√√ THERE ARE ONLY THREE KEYS YOU MUST "Hold Down" FOR THEM TO
- WORK
- They are what I call the SAC keys; they are the Shift,
- Alt, and Control (Ctrl) keys.
-
- These keys when pressed do nothing by themselves.
- They are always used with a second key. To use these three keys
- you must first press and hold down the key then strike a
- second key, like A ,B, or some other key, then release both keys.
-
- Example:
- √▀ The Control key plus the F2 activates the Spell Check
- program. Press F7 to cancel command.
- √▀ The Shift key plus F7 is the print command.
- √▀ The Alt key used with the Numeric keypad produces
- many different kinds of characters.
- Press and hold down the Alt key, then type 223 on the
- Numeric keyboard. Release both keys. This code makes
- this solid box (▀). See Appendix A for more codes.
-
- √√√ NUMERIC KEYPAD
- The keypad is a group of keys on the extreme right of the
- keyboard. When the Num Lock key is pressed and is in the On
- position you can use the numbers. When the Num Lock is in
- the Off position it activates the Home key, PgUp. PgDn,
- End, and the arrow key.
